The (Pan Card) Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique ten-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Government of India to all taxpayers. It is a universal identification tool that tracks all financial transactions taxable by the Government. This permanent number assigned to the PAN (Pan Card) holder serves as an essential ID proof. It is allotted to each taxpayer by the Income Tax Department of India under the supervision of the Central Board of Direct Taxes. The PAN does not change during the lifespan of the PAN (Pan Card) holder.

Application Process – Apply for Pan Card online

An applicant may either make an online application through this website or submit a physical PAN application to any TIN-FC or PAN centers of NSDL. The applicant is required to submit the following documents with the application form:

  • Proof of identity (POI)
  • Proof of address (POA)

Note: The documents for the above are dependent on the citizenship and status of the applicant. Details pertaining to these documents are also mentioned in the application form.

Applicants may obtain application forms from TIN-FCs and PAN centers, download them from this website or get them through other vendors.

Process Charges

For residential addresses within India, the processing fee for PAN applications is, Rs.107 (Rs.91+18% IGST)
For residential addresses outside India, the processing fee for PAN applications is, Rs. 1017.00 ({ Rs. 91.00 Application Fee+ Rs. 771.00 Dispatch Charge}+ 9% CGST and 9% SGST)

The applicant is only required to fill and submit the online application form along with online payment of the respective processing fee.

Points To remember before you apply for Pan Card

Application of PAN card is a very easy process but the applicant must keep in mind certain guidelines. Failure to remember those will result in the failure of allotment of PAN card. They are as follows:

  • Details should the same as the one mentioned in the proof of address and proof of identity.
  • Proper and full details regarding the address and contact number should be given.
  • Form 49A or the application form should be filled in capital letters.
  • Any kind of overwriting and rectifications are not entertained in the application form.
  • Only the initials of the applicant in the first name and last name columns should not be mentioned.
  • A fresh PAN card application is not supported if the old PAN card of the applicant is stolen, lost or disrupted.
  • If the applicant uses a thumb impression of either the Notary or the Magistrate, the application form will be immediately disqualified.

Once the application and payment are accepted, the applicant is required to send the supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL. Only after the receipt of the documents, PAN application would be processed by NSDL. Documents sent should support the changes applied for in PAN. For example, a request for the change in applicant’s or father’s name will have to be supported with a document that will contain a proof of a change of name from old to new. The documents that shall be accepted as proof in this case are:
  • For married ladies
    Change of name on account of marriage – marriage certificate, marriage invitation card, the publication of ‘name-change’ in the gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer stating name change, copy of passport showing husband’s name.
  • For individual applicants other than married ladies
    Publication of ‘name-change’ in the gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer stating name change.
  •  For companies
    ROC’s certificate for the name change is required. ROC stands for Registrar of Companies, and they handle administration and regulation of Companies Act, 1956.
  • For partnership firms
    A copy of the revised Partnership Deed
  • For other categories which are registered organizations (AOP/Trust/BOI/AJP etc.)
    The revised registration/deed/agreement.

PAN Card Dispatch

For a new PAN applicant, if the application satisfies all statutory requirements, the PAN card is dispatched within 15 days. In the case of a Change/Correction in PAN data, it takes 25 days.
